Students have the opportunity at Linwood to create and participate in Enterprise opportunities. This is an exciting project for students to develop skills as well as prepare for adulthood through the acquisition of life long skills required beyond Linwood.
Linwood has developed its own Enterprise Policies, which is displayed in each secondary phase classroom or campus communal area to remind students of skills they are developing.
These principles were developed through researching what staff felt were the main principles that students achieved through Enterprise at Linwood School.
As a result all Enterprise activities should cover these principles.
Below are a selection of Enterprise Projects that students have developed and participated in across the Linwood sites.
The Link – Tasty Bites
Students within The Link have the opportunity to participate in a staff lunch scheme. Students take and collate orders, shop for ingredients, budget and create pre ordered lunches for staff. This is a very successful business that students run themselves (with support from staff). Students making the lunches follow food hygiene rules with support from staff. Profit raised from this is given to the students chosen charity.
4LR – Business Enterprise
Students in 4LR have been busy creating and developing Spring gifts for staff to purchase. These include; jewellery, bath bombs, bird houses and fresh flower arrangements. Each term students work together to discuss what their shop will produce using the existing skills of the students. At Christmas time the 4LR shop was brimming with imaginative Christmas decorations and handmade Christmas cards.
4MD – Top Deck Café
Each Friday students in 4MD open their classroom to other Linwood students and staff for light refreshment. Homemade biscuits aswell as hot and cold drinks are all served in a relaxed atmosphere. Students take a particular job for the day (with a job description!). This can be anything from making drinks, serving customers, money handling, table service to the dreaded washing up. Top Deck Café is a warm and friendly atmosphere that students and staff alike really enjoy.
The Link – Business Enterprise
P16 students have engaged in a wide range of hands-on, practical activities related to celebrations throughout the year. Students have assisted in the creation of a large range of Christmas crafts, which were sold at the annual school fair, at a coffee afternoon and to class visitors. Students produced gift items for Valentines/Mother’s day, and had a successful Easter raffle and ‘hot cross bun’ afternoon for parents and school staff. Our students in P16 are given the opportunity to improve their fine motor, artistic and team building skills, as well experiencing handling money and giving change to our customers.
Juniper – Business Enterprise
Juniper have been working hard in enterprise this year. In the autumn term we made a variety of crafts to sell at the Christmas Fayre and Marks and Spencer in Bournemouth kindly donated a hamper to raffle off. We made some Christmas Pot Pourri, Christmas cards, planted some bulbs in old tea cups (donated), and some Mason jars. This term we have been creating sets of placemats and coasters to sell featuring our favourite Characters/things and when the weather is warmer after Easter we will be resuming our car washing enterprise at Springwood Campus. We designed our logo as a class, have been choosing designs to make place mats and coasters and giving the students choice at a level they can engage with regarding the enterprise process. The money we have earned we have been spending at local shops, in particular The Range to have snack in the café and purchase items to grow in our class area. Our students are a lot more confident in the use of money in the community, one is working on coin recognition, others on the process of exchanging money for goods and have made good progress in these areas.
Business Enterprise at Summerwood Campus
Enterprise at Summerwood is an important part of the curriculum model. It provides students the opportunity to gain experience in vital DIY skills as we have several furniture upcycling projects in progress. Students have also made Christmas gifts and cards.
