About us

Primary Phase covers Key Stages 1 and 2, for children aged from 5 to 11. There is a teacher and a number of teaching assistants in each class, the numbers of which can vary depending on the children’s needs within each class.

Learning is at the heart of everything we do. We work hard to create special and happy memories in a challenging but safe; caring but exciting learning environment. We want to make sure that children love coming to school. We are committed to raising achievement by meeting the specific needs of each pupil with a strong focus on communication skills.

We strongly believe in pupils learning for life and work hard to develop a unique child for the world of tomorrow. We provide a varied range of educational activities to give our children every opportunity to succeed and celebrate their success.

Working together

Parents, carers and grandparents are very important to us and you all play a vital role in the school. We take pride in getting to know our children really well; part of this is learning about your child at home, which helps us to do the very best for them at school. All the staff recognise the importance of developing good relationships and making everyone feel valued. We like to welcome you into the School and share information with you. About learning

At Linwood we have developed a supportive and nurturing ethos where we strive to inspire the children to take risks in their learning and to achieve their best. We are sensitive to each child’s needs and have developed a focused and personalised approach. We are supported by our own therapy team; Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy and our School Nurse. In addition we use a range of technology to support learning and communication.

Key Stage 1 (5 to 7 years)

In Stage 1 the children build on the excellent practice of Early Years teaching, and continue to use this approach for pupils in Years 1 and 2. We enable the children to further their learning journey by continuing to use the Early Years curriculum. The children maintain the success of learning through a child-led play based curriculum with a focus on communication, physical development, understanding of the world, expressive arts and personal and social development. Their English and Maths sessions are taught through topics. We focus on multi-sensory and Total Communication approaches which underpin all the children’s learning and play.

Key Stage 2 (7 to 11 years)

We teach to a modified National Curriculum designed and differentiated to suit our children’s individual needs. Maths and English are taught as individual subjects. We make very good use of first-hand experiences and use the environment, as much as possible, to develop real understanding. We also use a very active, hands-on approach to learning about interesting topics through cross curricular links. Overall, children develop skills for real life use.

Integrated within our teaching is the use of technology, development of social skills, well-being, co-operation, and independence and communication skills.
Your child will usually be taught by their class teacher although a specialist P.E. teacher will also work with them.

Learning beyond the classroom

We are always looking for ways in which our children can work alongside other children within our school and outside of it. This gives opportunities for personal development and mutual understanding.

We engage all children in many exciting activities to ensure that effective learning is taking place in and around the school grounds. Learning through play and physical activity are key and the children have access to three stimulating play areas, an outdoor trampoline and the solar-dome. The children swim in our own pool each week.
We plan trips and educational visits to bring topics and learning to life by creating wider experiences and learning as part of the local community. We also organise residential visits to Foxlease in the New Forest and to Leeson House near Swanage. By learning in this way we are creating unique and enjoyable experiences. We are helping to promote independence, a healthy lifestyle, resilience, support creativity, inventiveness and resourcefulness. This approach helps to develop problem-solving skills, co-operation and turn-taking. It promotes a sense of well-being and the confidence to try out new ideas back in the classroom.

Celebrating achievement

We encourage an atmosphere in which friendship, caring, sharing and awareness of others is consistently highlighted. All children have a ‘voice’ and they know that they will be listened to by staff. Their opinions and ideas for wider school issues are discussed through the School Council. The children’s achievements in all areas of school life are celebrated in different ways. These include:

  • Golden Pupil Assembly
  • Table of the Day
  • Performances and Assemblies


At Linwood we appreciate that each child is an individual with specific needs. We therefore assess children against their needs and celebrate progress wherever it may be. We are assessing how well your child is doing all the time so we can guide their next steps. Within the school we have systems to monitor and record their progress and we share these with you and the children through Progress Files, Personalised Learning Plans, Reading Records, Annual Reviews and at parent/teacher meetings. Most children will also have Sensory Profiles and Speech and Language reports which are shared with you.

Moving from class to class

As our children move through the school we try to make the changes to a new class as easy and comfortable as possible. We constantly review to see if a child is in the best class to support their learning and is accessing the most appropriate curriculum to meet their needs. For example, children who are not ready for subject specific learning follow the Alma curriculum in an Alma class.
We recognise that moving class can be an anxious time whatever the age of the child. To help with these moves we arrange a series of visits for the children to meet with their new staff team and spend time in their new classroom.

KS1 Phonics & Reading Scheme

For Key Stage 1, we use the Dandelion, Phonic Bug and Oxford Reading Tree reading schemes and Jolly Phonics.
