Sports Premium

At Linwood School we aim to provide a centre of excellence in which individuals are valued and encouraged to give of their best. We aim to establish a sporting culture that enables and encourages all students to play and enjoy sport. The School’s Extended Services has established a number of after-school and holiday clubs for our students offering a wide variety of activities and sporting opportunities. We are looking to continue the development of our PE and Swimming Curriculum and increase the opportunities for our students to participate in different sports and school sport competitions.

Our aim for PE at our campuses

We aim to improve the quality of the school PE programme through:

  • staff meetings and inset days, with a focus on delivering PE training to staff (staff and pupil questionnaires will be circulated to highlight areas of development).
  • exploring and sharing good practice with our local cluster schools to further improve our own PE curriculum.
  • continuing to support the school’s Extended Services with sports and holiday clubs.
  • entering teams into a wide range of school sport competitions.
  • planning and delivering sports days for campuses (primary & secondary) where all students will be able to participate and enjoy.
  • link a sports event with a charity scheme to support the wider world.

What is Sports Premium?

The Government has committed to funding for the Primary PE and Sport Premium to 2020 to improve the provision of PE and sport in primary schools. All schools will receive a lump sum of £8,000 plus a premium of £5 per pupil per academic year.

The Sport Premium funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. OFSTED’s role will be to ensure that all primary schools will use the funding in areas which will lead to clear outcomes in raising standards and opportunities in PE and school sport for all students throughout the Primary Phase.

The purpose of the funding

The Funding will need to be spent on improving the provision of PE and Sports within the school, but each school will have the freedom to choose how they spend the funding.

How will we be spending the Sports funding and who will benefit?

The Governors agree that the money must be used so that:

  • all students benefit regardless of sporting ability.
  • the most able students are given the opportunity to compete in advanced tournaments.
  • staff have access to training opportunities and continued professional development.

The funding will be used to:

  • increase the skill level of staff in the delivery of quality PE and swim teaching.
  • buy exciting and stimulating resources to facilitate the teaching of PE.
  • provide opportunities for students to compete. The school will be looking to be more involved in a number of local authority competitions. We feel it is important that students have the chance to represent their school and take part in competitive sport against other schools.
  • renew our subscription with Dorset Active and Youth Sports Trust.
  • provide places for students in after-school sport clubs and holiday courses.
  • establish sustainable partnerships with local community sports clubs.
  • subsidise outdoor and adventurous activities on residential trips.
  • make links to other community sports providers – encouraging students to join out of school sports clubs.
  • develop intra-school competitions.
  • develop the outdoor and adventurous activities element of the PE curriculum, utilising the school’s own grounds and facilities.

Impact

The impact of the Sports Premium funding will be evaluated as part of self-evaluation and provision mapping arrangements. We will look at how well we use our Sport Premium to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all students develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

Measuring the impact of the activities provided with sports premium funding can be achieved in different ways. We will look at progress in PE as well as other areas of development such as self-esteem, confidence and the numbers of students involved in sporting activities in and out of school. Assessments are made both formally and informally using our school assessment systems as well as feedback from staff and visitors to the school. We will also evaluate the impact of professional development opportunities in improving teaching and learning in PE. It is anticipated that at the end of the academic year we will have data to show the impact of this sports premium funding on pupil progress and involvement in sport.

Reporting Outcomes

Updates relating to our provision for PE and sport will be provided throughout the school year through the school website and newsletters. The impact of the funding will also be reported annually to parents, senior leadership and governors.

Sustainability

Linwood School’s use of the Sports Premium money means that our approach allows us to consider sustainability of the changes we have made. In 2016 – 17 we made a number of introductions which will help ensure we are able to continue to enhance the increase of physical activity in students and promote healthy lifestyles. Within the curriculum teaching, the students are developing their understanding of the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and regular fitness.

Evidence of our sustainability

  • Students across all key stages take part in and enjoy PE. They will be enthusiastic about learning new sports, gaining new skills and creating a positive sporting culture within school.
  • Increased teacher and staff confidence in delivering a wider range of PE sessions as a result of CPD training and working alongside high quality specialist sports coaches.
  • Audit of PE at end of school year to ensure that a variety of high quality resources are available for curriculum and training, all of which will provide students with the opportunity to participate in these sports for a number of years before needing to be replaced.
  • Achieve criteria for the School Games Silver Award for 2017/18 from the Bronze Award in 2016/17.
